How do you feel about tv /dvd's for little ones?

We always have the tv on in the house, several of them to be exact...

Livy doesn't watch it though very often. Saturday morning we do watch Sesame Street together (I love it). Sometimes in the evening after her bath I will play her favorite episode and we'll sing alond or practice the alphabet. It's a nice wind down from her busy day.

She also enjoys the Little Einstein's.

My boys watched tv and movies, I am not against it. There is some good stuff out there for little ones who might not get exposure to it by any other means. Not all households focus on the raising the kiddos and teaching them- the tv is their only shot.

Does your little one watch TV and if so what are the household favorites.

Tv is the bestest baby sitter ever! When my 5 year old was little, it was the only way to get any work done. Plus, there is so much educational stuff now that it's not like cartoons were when we were little.

I am really looking forward to Olivia getting into the Disney Movies, when the time comes. I really used to enjoy watching those with the boys. I love love love he Jungle Book. So many of them actually. We have the majority of them on vhs tape. Now having Olivia and Grace and Fin it gives me an excuse to get them ov DVD. :woohoo

I even like the movies with real folks like the apple dumplin gang, Witch Mtn. all of those ones too.

Again it's what suits. We spend a lot of time switching off electrical devices such as tv/dvd/ipod etc and hunt the kids outside - they always watch simpsons each week at 6pm (homework finished for the small ones by then) and we watch a couple of soaps in the evening but up till lunchtime there's no movies/computer etc - they are outside unless there's a hurricane and even then we'd be trying!! I do like a movie when we can but don't often have the time. The kids enjoy movies on the dvd and funnily enough the girls got a box set of shirley temple ones at xmas from an aunt and love it LOL! Neither hubby or I are fond of Disney corp and would never take the kids there or anything! we bad!!

As she gets older, she may really enjoy the leap frog videos like The Letter Factory. It is cute, engaging, very educational, and really helps to solidify sounds and letters for them. We usually watch PBS- Curious George, Clifford, Dragon Tales and he lately has gotten into Zula Patrol (introduces space and science concepts) and Arthur (very cute) from PBS as well. I try to avoid Nick, but Sponge Bob seems to come around every so often. Disney is great and yes, we loved Little Einsteins, Higgly Town Heroes, and the Koala Brothers when he was her age. My little man gets out alot, but still needs time to decompress and these shows offer an educational respits for him. Hope you keep these in mind as she gets older :)

Thanks Red~ yes I'll be looking into them as I have become a bit out of touch with Children's programming. I really enjoy quite time prior to bed reading and watching something that I know is quality for her. That's our time. I know my niece is very into Curious George~ I thought the books, so we'll look for that as well. It's fun when they get together and both have something in common they like. Thanks so much for the info. Hope things are well~ sure is a busy time of year for folks. emoticon

When mine were little, we had a vcr w/ the repeat feature on it. At the end of the tape, it would automatically rewind and start over. I think we wore out 2 or 3 copies of the lion king. Even though that is not the best thing to do, I had a full time job and in the evenings, I had to cook clean and wash clothes. Not to mention when I was taking courses at a community college on top of all that. It was sooo hard to find enough time to do everything.

Our boys are the same age~ Lion King was big in our place too (one year they even went as Lion King for Halloween). Boys watched more vcr tapes and stuff than Olivia does~ but we lived in such a remote location there was no cable only an antenna for local programming and the wind had to blow just right for us to have any channel to watch.

And there really aren't enough hours in the day
