It sure is awful. I can't even imagine. My friend Jimmy was telling me a lady was on the phone with her husband and said " I have to go the bridge is collapsing" and that was the last words he heard from her. I have not heard that they have located her.

How horrible for the family and friends.

We lived there for a year and drove over that bridge many times going to and from the University and other places. Absolutely amazing and horrific! This was a major thoroughfare with loads of traffic during rush hour (traffic on 35W is infamous there). It could have been so much worse, but its still just awful. My heart goes out to those who lost and are still missing family members. Hopefully, this damn government start to will allocate money appropriately and fix our crumbling infrastructure instead of continuing to fight a war with no direction. Sorry about the rant but this just irritates the heck out of me!

Re: Bridge collapse in Minnesoda

They did say from the snippet I caught on CNN that it passed its structural assessment for 2006 and that 2007's wasn't scheduled to take place until September. They were pretty adamant according to all their records it was structurally sound. Obviously it wasn't though. We do a pretty fair amount of work in the civil industry / we also when working underground are governed by MSHA...and it amazes me what safety practices can be glossed over when they need to be, when its convenient. Many times we are called to a tunnel, bridge or railroad that is emoticon structurally sound emoticon and it's not.

They need to rework they way they make their assessments. When structures of this nature are being built being checked they need to have specific guidelines that are followed. Pass or Fail. When a structure is marked failed it needs red tagged until it is fit and falls within industry standard. Regardless how convenient it is because it is always most inconvenient for people to lose their loved one.

Watching the footage stops my heart everytime. Of course, the news then sensationalizes and speculates if every major bridge in the US can collapse. I wonder who'll take the heat for this one?
