Off to a Great Start

A few days before school Zak was very ill with the tummy bug and broke his glasses fighting the bug... well apparently everyone waits to right at school start time to gt into the eye doc so... needless to say we had a heck of a time getting an emergency appointment. Second day of school I was able to. So we got him specs. He missed day 2 because we had to make the appointment and also because he hadn't had vision and had to adjust to new frames. I had a whole insurance issue there as well but won't even go into that ~ he got specs...

Today right at 2:30 school nurse called Zak rolled his ankle and needed the er. I work to far away to get to the school that time of day so Mom left the Post Office early and took him to the er. The swelling is so severe they couldn't get a proper read on them xrays so off school tomorrow, icing as instructed and propping up and an appointment with a specialist Monday to find out what the damage is. So he will most likely miss Monday as well.

Rocky start but like I told him ~ get all the bad outta the way right out of the shoot.

He is staying with Mom ~ 38 stairs between the main floor and his mancave and that's just too much 20 some stairs to get to a potty. Mom has a ranch so it just makes things easier on him.

He's 17 and is a patient just like his Dad is ~ and that's no compliment so this will be a great bonding expeirence, because Mom is no Florence Nightengale ;)

She did take wonderful care of him though and I know they will have a blast ~ two silly peas in a pod

Lost - homepathic arnica orally (crush 1 tablet into a bottle of water, shake well and have him sip it through the day for 3-5 days - make fresh each day and when he sips should hold it in his mouth for a few secs and slush it around) and arnica cream rubbed onto the ankle (as long as the skin isn't broken) will do wonders. Just thought i'd mention it. It really will take down a huge amount of the swelling.

Gosh - you're in the wars lady ain't ya! I'm sure he'll love his holiday at the ranch!

Edited to add: if it turns out to be a torn ligament the follow on remedy from arnica is ruta grav. This comes both in tablets and cream also.

ty actually going to call my boss's wife to see if her neighbor either has this on hand or can direct me where to purchase. His ankle is huge.

Do these tablets only come in one dose? I would hate to kill him with my first attempt at homeopathic treatment ~ that wouldn't go over well :)

Thanks bunches

Don't worry - any dose is perfectly safe.

The normal potencies (or strengths) for tablets (~100 tabs per box) available in shops are 6C, 9C, 12C and 30C. If possible get the highest 30C. If you can get 200C it would be the best. Acute injuries need good high strength to get best effect. These are really safe so it won't harm him. Really worth doing. The reason i say to crush into water is that it saves on the tablets and you get the same result doing that as taking tablets all day long. The cream is really effective too but not enough for such an acute injury. If it's all you can get it'll certainly help but the 2-pronged approach would be most effective.

Re: Off to a Great Start

I sent a note home with my boss ~ as his wife was outside with the helper she has doing yard work ~ I am hoping she calls in the morning.

He has had problems with this ankle for years now. He sprained it badly when he was around the age of 14. He nicked the "growth plate" that's what we were told. Now it seems that ankle is prone to "rolling" very easily. The doctor he has who has been treating this ankle from day one is not available Monday ~ he is actually taking an extended weekend so Monday we see his partner who I would think just from what I hear around town is more "sought after" when it comes to treating the more serious injuries people have. Zak's injury in the grand scheme of things I am sure is very minor one ~ considering what they deal with at their practice, but I am concerned that he continues to have repeated episodes with this ankle.

Zak is a big boy ~ he is just about 6' 3" might even be taller it is difficult for me to gauge that. He wears a size 13 shoe and he is about 180-200 pounds ~ pretty muscular as he has been working out a bit and paying closer attention to maintaining a healthy diet. (Girls have brought about changes I guess). Not being rude, but he grew quickly, still continues to grow and I don't think he has comfortably gotten used to his size because he is a bit clutzy ~ could be he was blessed with my genetics as well.

I don't want him to have continual problems ~ he will be 18 in December we always have 1 event a year that requires the orthopedics's office usually 2 and several times a year we treat the ankle at home. I am hoping Dr. Spignola will be able to get him back on the road to recovery ( I am sure that will happen) and that he also has a little something up his sleeve as far as building up the strength so that this doesn't continue to plague him. We have had several rounds of physical therapy that we have attended every appointment ~ nothing we seem to do helps ~long term.

Any advice on any of this is appreciated ~ I am in pursuit of the arnica, my Mom is too as she works in a neighboring larger town. Just spoke with Zak ~ who just got done with a gourmet meal of fillet mignon ~ steamed veggies, rice and a dessert that he didn't know what it was called but he had 2 servings (thinking I might need an injury and head over to my mommy's house) he is in tremendous pain ~ they gave him 6 pain pills yesterday in the er, but they haven't relieved the pain ~ the swelling is still bad and they have iced every hour taking a break for 20 minutes each hour as instructed ~ this evening they were supposed to stop the icing and continue the elevation, which they are. My mom isn't sure with all this swelling is she should quit the ice ~ but that's what she was specifically told to do.

We're just trying to hang in until Monday, if the pain gets much worse ~ we are going to take him back up. We have no other choice on a Friday evening.

Red will confirm but i believe the protocol is R I C E
Rest
Ice
Compression
Elevation

Hopefully the hosp will give you a good regime to get that strengthened up. His posture has probably compensated for the weak ankle so he may need some work there. Lucky boy - I'd love a meal like that!!

All round to Lost's mom for dinner!!! emoticon

The swelling is down by half. Mom continued on with the ice just because she knew he needed it. Has ached all day something awful ~ he didn't feel like eating so that tells us everything, but he said he doesn't think he needs to go back to the er.

Make sure he truly has it elevated above his heart for the swelling, check the perfusion in his toes (gently sqeeze the toenail, blanch it, and then see if the color returns quickly- which it should), check the color of his skin (should be pink obviously except possiibly where the injury occured), and give him some ibuprofen/mortin if he can tolerate it/take it. Make sure he has something on his stomach- if he can't or won't eat, then have him drink a little milk and then take the dosage for his age/size.

Young men are notoriously unable to handle pain well and it may take a while to get on top of it (it once took me a whole shift to get a patient's pain under control). A wonderful ice bag is to use frozen veggies- especially peas or corn- that you can then use for dinner that night once thawed. Sounds funny but the bag conforms to the ankle etc well and gives a nice ice down.

Hope he feels better. Sounds like the swelling is at least headed in the right direction emoticon
