Sloe Liqueur
This is what we did yesterday - we had spotted an old blackthorn shrub nearby that had huge sloe's on it so we went out and picked about 4lbs of them, washed them, pricked the skins with the thorn of the blackberry (some superstitious nonsense but thought better not to risk it - the thorns are huge and v.sharp) added a few oz's of sugar and then using 3.5 litres of cheap vodka (gin can be used for sloe gin but we're not gin people altho' i do like a G&T now and again) made up 8 x large bottles of the liqueur. Already today it's a beautiful red colour. They will sit (agitated every few days) for 2-3 months and then it gets strained off into smaller bottles & labeled as gifts or I suppose we could drink some! It can be kept for a year or so - some people keep it for years and say the flavour improves. Our cupboards are now filled with about 50 lbs of crabapple jelly (from what was our Dad's family farm), 20 lbs of blackberry & apple jam and these 8 bottles of sloe liqueur! The hedgerows are our larder this year! What will we do with it all tho'.......all round to my place in Feb for some sloe drinkin'??? It's supposed to be v.good with ice as a digestive after meals, good for colds as a 'hot toddy' and for the more sophisticated we could use it as a 'creme' ie a shot into a wine glass and topped up with a good chilled dry white wine....any takers??

I am ready and can take mine right from a jug, you don't even need to break out the special dinnerware for me as I will quite nicely grab a jug & holler for the kids to take me up to see the girls
Wow that sounds like that would have been neat putting that together. I love the use of the thorn of a blackberry, very cool.
At this time I could use it as a liquid diet, no need for food a good buzz would do wonders for me I think.
I hope you guys really enjoy it, in all honesty it sounds just wonderful.

How interesting. I never knew what a sloe was, and still don't! What is it - a berry? A fruit? How big is it and where do you get them? I have made homemade wine in the past (grape, and tomato) and my own Kahlua too, but never heard of this. Sounds like you like to do a lot of homemade stuff and that's very cool and of course you are the best kind of friends and relatives to have, especially around the holidays! :)

Sorry - that should be the thorn of the Blackthorn bush which is what the sloes grow on . Blackthorn is amazing, beautiful dark branches and they flower before the leaves appear so are one of the first spring flowers in the hedgerows here. 'Blackthorn sticks' are cut from them - used as walking sticks or child discipline tools in the old days. The thorns are up to 4" long and on some old shrubs they can be longer. They are the 'plum' family of fruit - small black fruits with a stone in the middle and terribly bitter. Here's a picture Picture of Sloes

Well we used vodka instead of Gin but probably same effect!! When the old man made it a few years ago he used poteen - blow the head off ya it would! It's getting a nice dark red now - we'll decant it for xmas....try to persuade some folk to drink it so we can get rid of it LOL!
